National Cat Health Month

February is the one month that it is all things cats! Did you know? …

  • 18% of households in the UK own a cat.
  • Cats are believed to be the only mammals who don’t taste sweetness.
  • Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping.
  • Cats can jump up to 6 times their length.
  • Cats have 18 toes.
  • A group of cats is called a “clowder”.

Has your cat had its annual check-up for the year? Give us a call or book online to book your cats routine health check! There is no better time to focus on your cat than “Cat Health Month”.

Here are some things that you can do to help your cat stay in tip top condition;

  • Regular health checks
  • Spay/ Neuter your cat
  • Keep up to date with vaccinations
  • Monitor their litter tray for any changes
  • Keep an eye on your cats weight/ body condition

Your vet may check your cats’ teeth, ears, eyes, skin, coat, and any lumps at their annual health check, we would then recommend 6 months after their health check they come back to see the nurse for another health check to pick up/ monitor any changes with your cat.

It is best to keep up with regular health checks on your cat as unfortunately they can be very good at hiding health issues! If your cat suddenly begins to hide or displays any changes in eating or toileting habits, then this can be a sign that there is something going on with them.

Getting your cat to the vet

Cats are notoriously difficult to get to the vets as they generally hate trips in the car! To keep your cat safe, you need to use a cat carrier, here at Apex Vets we would recommend getting your cat acquainted with their carrier. Why not use their carrier at home; try placing their favourite treat or toy in it to get them in there and used to it so your cat can associate the carrier with being a happy place, rather than knowing every time they go in the box, they are going to a place they don’t like to get poked or prodded!

We would recommend a top loading wire carrier with a solid base (we have these available to buy in the practice) as this makes loading and unloading much easier therefore reducing stress. Feliway sprays can also be used in the car and carrier up to 15 minutes before travelling to give off good vibes to your cat.

We would also recommend that you withhold food before travelling to reduce feelings of car sickness and promote treat taking while they are in to see us.

Once you arrive at the practice don’t forget to take advantage of our cat lounge with the custom-made cat tower which enables you to place your cats’ box in a high position, making them feel confident in their new surroundings.

Always let us know if your cat has stress or anxiety when coming to see us, this can be noted on their file and we can accommodate for this when in the practice.
