Should I get a pet reptile?

Glenn explains that while pet reptiles may not need walks around Stirlingshire or grooming like a dog, they often require highly specific care. Heating, lighting, humidity and diet all play vital roles in keeping them healthy. Cutting corners can quickly lead to illness. Below, Glenn gives their answers to...

Commonly searched questions on pet reptiles

1. What should I ask myself before bringing one home?

  1. Can I afford the proper equipment, food, and long-term vet care?
  2. Is the species legal where I live?
  3. Do I have the time to clean, monitor, and care for a pet reptile properly?
  4. Am I committed to a pet that may live 20+ years?

2. What kind of habitat do pet reptiles need?

Glenn shares that different reptiles have different requirements:

  • Snakes: Need secure, escape-proof enclosures.
  • Lizards: Often need branches, rocks, or live plants for climbing or hiding.
  • Tortoises: Prefer wide, ground-level spaces to roam.

3. What about lighting, heating and humidity?

Reptiles rely on external heat to regulate their body temperature. Most also need:

  • UVB lighting for calcium absorption.
  • Heat lamps or mats for basking.
  • Controlled humidity, which varies by species.

4. What do reptiles eat?

Again, Glenn advises that it depends on the species - for example:

  • Snakes: Typically eat frozen/thawed rodents.
  • Lizards: Some are insectivores, others eat fruit or vegetables.
  • Tortoises: Usually herbivores, needing a mix of leafy greens.

Supplements like calcium powder are often essential - get in touch for more advice on what reptiles eat.

5. Can reptiles be handled?

Some species - like bearded dragons and corn snakes - can become quite tame with gentle, regular handling. Others are more stress-prone and best left alone. Glenn says it's important to always research the temperament of the species you're considering.

6. How long do reptiles live?

  • Bearded dragons: 10-15 years.
  • Corn snakes: 15-20 years.
  • Leopard geckos: Up to 20 years.
  • Tortoises: 50-100+ years It's a serious long-term commitment!

7. Can reptiles carry diseases?

Yes. Glenn advises that most, if not all, reptiles carry Salmonella bacteria in their intestinal tracts and may shed these bacteria in their faeces - it's considered a normal part of the reptile gut microbiome. As salmonella can be passed to humans - especially children or those with weaker immune systems - good hygiene and proper handling are essential.

8. How much do reptiles cost?

Beyond the initial cost of the reptile, you'll need to budget for:

  • Enclosure and decor Heating and lighting equipment.
  • Thermometers and timers.
  • Food and supplements.
  • Routine vet check-ups with a vet who is experienced with reptile care.

Costs can range from £100 to £1,000+ depending on species and setup. Glenn and our team at Apex Vets are experienced in treating a variety of reptiles and exotic pets - book an appointment with us today.

9. Where should I get a pet reptile?

Choose captive-bred reptiles from reputable breeders or adoption centres in and around Stirlingshire. Always avoid wild-caught animals - they often carry more health risks and contribute to population declines in the wild.

Ready to Reptile?

Reptiles can make rewarding companions, but they need a very different kind of care than dogs or cats. If you're ready to commit, do your research, invest in a proper setup, and seek advice from an exotic pet vet in Denny, such as Apex Vets' Glenn Hodgson, before you bring one home.
