World Snake Day on the 16th July
On the 16th of July, World Snake Day is held every year to increase awareness over the 3,500 snake species that exist across the world, with an ever-increasing amount of people opting for exotic pets, more and more of these fang-tastic reptiles are living in our homes!
Snakes can make great pets for new and experienced owners, but there are a few important points to consider before you decide to bring one home.

Your snake’s enclosure should mimic their natural habitat as much as possible, and of course, be safe and secure. Exercise and enrichment are important to stay happy and healthy, some species may benefit from branches to climb up, rocks to slither around their enclosure and they may enjoy having a hide in their enclosure. It is important to make sure their enclosure is the right size for them, keeping in mind how big they may finally grow to be! We must make sure we research their needs before bringing them home. Some snakes like to have a pool in their enclosure as they occasionally like a dip -it is vital that this is kept clean.
Small or young snakes may need to eat twice a week, but some larger snakes can (and will) go much longer between meals. Like all animals, snakes need a plentiful supply of fresh water too. Again, it is vital for your snake’s wellbeing that you research for your snake’s species specific needs to provide them with the best care you can.
All snakes are carnivores and most like their food whole – so be prepared to keep frozen rats, mice, and insects! Keep other small pets well out of your snake’s reach. It is best not to take any chances!
Just like when you are thinking of buying a dog or cat, it is important to research sellers thoroughly before you buy from them. Your snake’s welfare should be the number one priority when considering getting one.
Snakes rely on their environment to maintain the correct body temperature so you must make sure you have the correct equipment for them, and each breed of snake will require a different set up. Prior research is VITAL.
Popular snakes for beginners include corn snakes, rat or kingsnakes and royal pythons.
